Coastal Maine
Last week I
took a quick over night trip to Maine with my cousin. While there I visited the
Boothbay Harbor area. I was not that impressed with downtown Booth Bay Harbor. Most
shops closed at 5 or 6 pm. I thought that was early for a late summer night. Also,
not happy with the restaurant choice we made. We dined at Mine Oyster. The view
was awesome and the onion rings were quite tasty but the steak was extremely
chewy and the toasted roll for the burger was burnt on one side. Our waitress
Ellie was fantastic.
We did visit
some very picturesque spots. First was Pemaquid point lighthouse. Such a cute
park with gorgeous ocean views. There is an entry fee of $4 per person. There
is plenty of parking and a small house with clean restrooms. I was able to climb
to the top of the lighthouse and the view from up there was spectacular. A
little tricky near the top as it was very narrow and your last 5 steps were on
a ladder, but so worth the climb.
Then walked
around the small town of Damariscotta. Lots of fun shops and plenty of places
to grab a bite or a cocktail which we did at King Elders pub. Extremely nice
staff. The manager was going to give us his umbrella to keep because it was
raining when we were trying to leave and he did not want us to get wet. If ever
in this town again I will definitely stop here for a drink and a bit to eat.
Spent the night
at Flagship Inn in Boothbay Harbor, I DO NOT recommend this place. Cost was
$150 for the night. Had to change rooms because TV did not work in first room.
Second room TV worked but, bathroom door did not close, towel rack (where clean
towels were) was rusted, dead bolt lock on door did not work, and beds
uncomfortable and they tipped over if 2 people sat on the same side. On the
bright side, we got a complimentary breakfast that wasn’t too bad. Another plus
was the delicious ice cream shop across the street. We had a late night snack
over there. We were going to relax in the hot tub but that closed at 8:00 pm so
we went for ice cream. I got 3 scoops in a waffle bowl for only $8. The name of
the place was Downeast Ice Cream factory.
Second day we made a trip to Ocean point Booth Bay and found some spectacular water views. You can park on the side of the road and just walk along the sea shore. While there, we found an adorable chapel so we had to go in and explore. It was a small chapel made of stone with some stained glass and so quaint.
Next we went
to Freeport, Maine. I enjoyed walking around this town. So many stores. There
was a mix of brand names like, Sketcher, J Crew, Old Navy, and some smaller
gift shops that are always fun to shop in. Spent the most money in the Lindt
chocolate store. While walking around
town I spotted the LLBean boot drive by.
Started home
around 2:00 and made a stop in Portland to have a late lunch at Becky’s diner.
I can’t say enough good things about this restaurant. One of us had a large plate of whole belly clams with fries and coleslaw for $24. The other had a small plate of fried scallops with fries and coleslaw for $20. Great food at a good value.
I really do love visiting the state of Maine.
