The Big E

The Big E is a fair held in Springfield Mass every September. This year the fair started on September 18th and ends on October 4th. I try to go every year because there is so much to see and do. The gates open at 8am but everything else doesn't open/start until 10 am. I arrived at 10am and stayed until 7:30 pm. I suggest you park at gate 9. That is the largest parking lot and easy access to the gate. Cost to park there is $15. Cost to enter the fair is $20 and can be purchased at the gate. You do not have to purchase online and pay that extra online fee. 

There is a midway section with rides and games. The ride ticket is an additional $40 so I did not go on any rides. 

Food is everywhere! so much to choose from. I enjoyed a blooming onion for only $10. That was my appetizer to start the day.


For lunch I went to a restaurant in the storrowtown section of the fair. "Storrow Town tavern" I was not happy with my burger. It tasted burnt, but my fries were delicious. Then later while watching the Ox pull I had some delicious funnel cake.

Animals are everywhere. Piglets were born at the beginning of the fair. so cute. Then there were the clydesdales, Llama, sheep, cows, ox, goats and I love watching the baby chicks hatch,




There is also music all around the fair.  One of the stages has some better known groups. That is the honor court stage. When I was there one group was all about the music of Queen. Later in the week Drew Baldridge was going to be there. I would have loved to see him as one of his songs was the one I danced to with my son at his wedding.  Uncle Kraker performed there on opening day and chubby checker was going to be there later in the week.
My favorite entertainment was the parade that takes place everyday at 6pm. 



There were several floats that were throwing out mardi gras beads. I ended up with over 10 bead necklaces. 

Every New Englad State has a building at the fair. The most impressive building to me was Rhode Island. They had such a nice display when you entered then you walk around and can buy food from the area and buy Rhode Island products. 


The Maine building had a long line at the loaded baked potato but I didn't like that the cheese was the melted nacho cheese. 

Before leaving I had to make sure I found the butter sculpture. I have that pictured here below.

 This time of year is perfect for a trip to Newport. I went this week when the temperature was 80 degrees and it was a perfect day.  First stop was Fort Adams State park. The views are beautiful on the water. There is plenty of free parking and there are restrooms inside the gift shop. There is a fort to tour but I wet on Tuesday and that is the one day of the week that it is closed.  There is a tall ship that calls Fort Adams home. That ship is the Oliver Hazard perry. After a short stay at the park with a nice walk around the water, I headed to Thames Street to eat lunch and go shopping. There are so many cute shops both on Thames Street and along the water. There is street parking for $2 per hour or lots where you can park for up to $15 for the day.  I found plenty of street parking.  Went to lunch at TwentyTwo Bowen's. My waiter, Stephan, was fabulous! Coastal Maine

  Last week I took a quick over night trip to Maine with my cousin. While there I visited the Boothbay Harbor area. I was not that impressed with downtown Booth Bay Harbor. Most shops closed at 5 or 6 pm. I thought that was early for a late summer night. Also, not happy with the restaurant choice we made. We dined at Mine Oyster. The view was awesome and the onion rings were quite tasty but the steak was extremely chewy and the toasted roll for the burger was burnt on one side. Our waitress Ellie was fantastic. We did visit some very picturesque spots. First was Pemaquid point lighthouse. Such a cute park with gorgeous ocean views. There is an entry fee of $4 per person. There is plenty of parking and a small house with clean restrooms. I was able to climb to the top of the lighthouse and the view from up there was spectacular. Pickety Place for Lunch

 I recently took another trip to Mason, NH for lunch. I took the 90 minute drive along with a friend to get lunch at Pickety Place. If you haven't been there I strongly suggest that you make the trip. The cute cottage in NH has been converted into a restaurant and gift shop.  They have 3 seatings for lunch at 11:30, 12:45 and 2:00. When the dinner bell rings you can enter the restaurant and will be told which table is yours. You MUST make a reservation in advance. I suggest at least 2 weeks in advance although one time I had to go 3 weeks out to find an available time. Everyone eats the same meal. When you get to your table there will be crakcers and dip for you to enjoy. Once the waitress gets your drink order she will bring the bread of the month to your table.
