Lake Placid

 I recently spent 3 days reliving the 1980 olympics in Lake Placid, New York. I have only been home for 2 weeks and I am ready to go back and visit this place again.

We started our vacation at 5am on a Wednesday morning as we started our drive from Eastern Massachusetts. We made several stops along the way at Rest Areas on the Mass Pike and then at a few in New York along route 87. The rest areas in NY were so nice. With great props for pictures as seen in the pics below.



We got to our hotel, Lake Placid Grandview, just after noon time and even though check in time was 4pm they let us check in early.  The hotel was wonderful and I highly reccomend you stay here when traveling to Lake Placid. After we had everything moved into our room and we had explored the hotel, we ventured over to the Ski jump facility. WOW, the top is so high!! These pictures don't come close to showing how it looks in person.



Next up was to find the Olympic torch which now sits in the middle of fields, Athletic fields to the left and fields where horse shows happen to the right.

We had dinner at the hotel in the "great Room" food was delicious and so reasonbly priced with gorgeous mountain views from our window seat.

That night we spent some time just relaxing outside taking in the sunset mountain views. and a little time in the pool and hot tub.

The next Day started with breakfast downtown at the Breakfats club restaurant.  Delicious food and large portions. Neither one of us could finish everything. We had eggs on hash and an egg sandwich of egg cheese and bacon in between 2 waffles. 


We spent time walking around downtown. There is so much to see. There are so many cute shops, I enjoyed walking through the Christmas shop which now has me excited for the holiday which is only 130 days away. Downtown has plenty of parking lots with restrooms and there is also on street parking. We paid $3.50 for 4 and half hours so the parking lots are inexpensive. Downtown Lake Placid is located along Mirror Lake so there is a public beach where the Ironman race begins (held here every year). You will also find the tobogan ride which is a slide that brings you out onto mirror lake. This is a ride that opens when the lake is frozen.




After spending a few hours walking around downtown we made our way over to the Mt. Van Hoevenberg where the bobsled race is held in addition to the Luge and biathalon. During this warm weather you can ride the cliffside coaster which is an alpine slide ride where you control your speed as you travel down the mountain beside the bobsled trail. the cost is $50 per person for this ride.
I did not ride. Instead I just walked around and was a tourist.

The last stop of the day was the olympic museum which closes at 5pm. We had one hour in there which is enough time. The cost is $15. My two favorite things in the museum was the short video which chronicles the hockey teams journey and the bobsled simulator. That was awesome because you sat in a bobsled and the screen in front of you has the bobsled run. You push a button to get started and you feel like you are actually riding down the mountain in the bobsled.

The next picture is the ice rink where the 1980 hockey team won the gold medal. There was an international ice dance competition going on when I was there but the nice man working there let me peak in to take alook 



This next picture is the view the minute you turn into the parking lot at whiteface mountain where all the downhill skiing took placae at the olympics.



I am now in love with mountain views. Each morning that we were there we had some rain but I still loved sitting outside the hotel and enjoying the view. 


You should definitely take a trip here. This trip will not break the bank and there is lots to see and do.

 This time of year is perfect for a trip to Newport. I went this week when the temperature was 80 degrees and it was a perfect day.  First stop was Fort Adams State park. The views are beautiful on the water. There is plenty of free parking and there are restrooms inside the gift shop. There is a fort to tour but I wet on Tuesday and that is the one day of the week that it is closed.  There is a tall ship that calls Fort Adams home. That ship is the Oliver Hazard perry. After a short stay at the park with a nice walk around the water, I headed to Thames Street to eat lunch and go shopping. There are so many cute shops both on Thames Street and along the water. There is street parking for $2 per hour or lots where you can park for up to $15 for the day.  I found plenty of street parking.  Went to lunch at TwentyTwo Bowen's. My waiter, Stephan, was fabulous! Coastal Maine

  Last week I took a quick over night trip to Maine with my cousin. While there I visited the Boothbay Harbor area. I was not that impressed with downtown Booth Bay Harbor. Most shops closed at 5 or 6 pm. I thought that was early for a late summer night. Also, not happy with the restaurant choice we made. We dined at Mine Oyster. The view was awesome and the onion rings were quite tasty but the steak was extremely chewy and the toasted roll for the burger was burnt on one side. Our waitress Ellie was fantastic. We did visit some very picturesque spots. First was Pemaquid point lighthouse. Such a cute park with gorgeous ocean views. There is an entry fee of $4 per person. There is plenty of parking and a small house with clean restrooms. I was able to climb to the top of the lighthouse and the view from up there was spectacular. Cape Cod Getaway

 Once memorial day is here the population on Cape Cod gets extremely high so I always like to take a few days down cape just before that time. The weather is usually on the warm side and the beaches are empty. I don't go in the ocean but I do like to walk along the beach and sometimes just sit and read. I find the sound of the waves quite soothing. I stayed at Ocean Mist Beach Hotel in Yarmouth. This hotel has their own private beach and plenty of ocean front rooms. To save money this time I got only a partial ocean view room. I paid $99 per night and with taxes and fees it totaled $136. I have stayed here multiple times and I love the view.   I had a king bed and a sleep sofa in my room and a small deck with two chairs. Before settling in for the night I enjoyed the hot tub to myself. So relaxing to sit in the hot tub while listening to the ocean.
