Coastal Maine

Image
Last week I took a quick over night trip to Maine with my cousin. While there I visited the Boothbay Harbor area. I was not that impressed with downtown Booth Bay Harbor. Most shops closed at 5 or 6 pm. I thought that was early for a late summer night. Also, not happy with the restaurant choice we made. We dined at Mine Oyster. The view was awesome and the onion rings were quite tasty but the steak was extremely chewy and the toasted roll for the burger was burnt on one side. Our waitress Ellie was fantastic. We did visit some very picturesque spots. First was Pemaquid point lighthouse. Such a cute park with gorgeous ocean views. There is an entry fee of $4 per person. There is plenty of parking and a small house with clean restrooms. I was able to climb to the top of the lighthouse and the view from up there was spectacular. A little tricky near the top as it was very narrow and your last 5 steps were on a ladder, but so worth the climb. Then walked around the small town of ...

Pickety Place

Image
Do you enjoy going out to eat? want to try a unique experience? I have the place for you. Wednesday I traveled to Mason, NH with a friend of mine for a delicious lunch at a place called "Pickety Place"  There is an adorable red cottage that has 3 seatings for lunch, 11:30, 12:45, and 2:00. We went for 11:30. The food was amazing! everyone lined up outside waiting for out time to be allowed in. The dinner bell rang at 11:30 and the door opened for all to enter. You give your name and they direct you to the room you are in and which table you have. There are only 3 small rooms so not many people can dine and you MUST have a reservation. Be aware that they are booked 3 weeks out so make sure you call early. When we got to our table there were crackers and dip waiting for us and the soup came within 2-3 minutes of us sitting down. I was a little skeptical of chilled cantaloupe soup, but it was so good. Next came the salad which on this day was potato salad on a bed of lettuce. S...

Decordova Sculpture Park

Image
If you would like a calm, peaceful, place to walk and some some interesting views, then I suggest you travel to Lincoln, MA. Yesterday I went to the Decordova sculpture park located at 51 sandy Pond Road in Lincoln, Ma.  This park is 30 acres with a little bit of everything. There is one parking lot centrally located. There is a gift shop, cafe, and restrooms right beside the parking lot. There are plenty of benches scattered throughout the park. There are also a couple of courtyards that have tables and chairs. One courtyard is at the top of a hill and from there you have a nice water view. there are all different types of sculptures. Each sculpture comes with a QR code that brings you to a website with more information about both the sculpture and the artist. there is a $14 fee to enter the park but definitely worth it. I saw some people brought their coolers and used the picnic table area to enjoy some lunch. Here are few more sculptures I spent two hours walking around an...

Hampton Beach Sand Sculptures

Image
Today I traveled to Hampton Beach in New Hampshire. Their Annual Sand sculpting Classic is underway. Over the past weekend the sculptors made the sand sculptures advertising the sponsors for this event.   They are incredible. It is amazing what someone can do with sand. Now it is time for the sculptors to start their own artwork to try and win prize money. $6000 for first place $4000 for second $3000 for third $2000 for fourth  You can also vote for your favorite on Saturday and the winner of that peoples choice gets $1000 The artists were allowed to pack and stack their sand today They get 8 hours on both Thursday and Friday to complete their sculpture. They will then be around for a week. If you get the chance you should take the ride up tp get a look at these. Parking along the beach fill ups quick so get there early. Those spots are $3 per hour. There are also lots where you pay one price for the day. Most were $30 but I found a lot for only $10 for the day and ...

Newport, RI

This time of year is perfect for a trip to Newport. I went this week when the temperature was 80 degrees and it was a perfect day.  First stop was Fort Adams State park. The views are beautiful on the water. There is plenty of free parking and there are restrooms inside the gift shop. There is a fort to tour but I wet on Tuesday and that is the one day of the week that it is closed.  There is a tall ship that calls Fort Adams home. That ship is the Oliver Hazard perry. After a short stay at the park with a nice walk around the water, I headed to Thames Street to eat lunch and go shopping. There are so many cute shops both on Thames Street and along the water. There is street parking for $2 per hour or lots where you can park for up to $15 for the day.  I found plenty of street parking.  Went to lunch at TwentyTwo Bowen's. My waiter, Stephan, was fabulous! Food was yummy but be prepared to pay a little extra for the beautiful views on the dock. My roastbeef au j...

Cape Cod Getaway

Image
Once memorial day is here the population on Cape Cod gets extremely high so I always like to take a few days down cape just before that time. The weather is usually on the warm side and the beaches are empty. I don't go in the ocean but I do like to walk along the beach and sometimes just sit and read. I find the sound of the waves quite soothing. I stayed at Ocean Mist Beach Hotel in Yarmouth. This hotel has their own private beach and plenty of ocean front rooms. To save money this time I got only a partial ocean view room. I paid $99 per night and with taxes and fees it totaled $136. I have stayed here multiple times and I love the view.   I had a king bed and a sleep sofa in my room and a small deck with two chairs. Before settling in for the night I enjoyed the hot tub to myself. So relaxing to sit in the hot tub while listening to the ocean. I made sure to set my alarm so I could be out on the beach for sunrise at 5:22 am. The sky was gorgeous. There is so much to ...
